Square Enix announced and revealed a new tech demo today known as WITCH CHAPTER 0 [cry], which has put together the latest graphics technology in DirectX 12 to present a different side of Agni’s Philosophy. (New footage starts at 1:38.)

As a part of a research project that studies a variety of next generation technologies, Square Enix conducted extensive research on real-time CG technology utilizing DirectX 12 in collaboration with Microsoft and NVIDIA, makers of high-end graphics technology. The results of this research will be incorporated into Square Enix’s Luminous Studio engine, and is intended for use in future game development.

“Our team has always pursued cutting-edge pre-rendered and real-time CG,” commented Hajime Tabata, head of the next-generation technology research project and Division Executive of Business Division II of Square Enix. “As a part of the technical development, we created this demo using world-class, real-time CG technology with generous support from leading-edge software and hardware providers – Microsoft’s Windows10/DirectX 12 and NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX. The efforts from this project will power future game development as well as Final Fantasy XV, currently a work in progress.” (source)

Square Enix may be introducing a round of new content for Final Fantasy XV Episode Duscae, the company announced today during a new Active Time Report detailing the results of various Episode Duscae feedback surveys. Set for possible release as a free downloadable patch from mid to late May, players will be able to extend their playtime with the demo through new enhancements to the current gameplay systems.

Director Tabata confirmed the following changes will be available in version 2.00 including Active Cross Battle enhancements, improved camera and targeting system, additional combat actions and rebalancing along with more joint attacks as well as the addition of dodge rolls and adjustments to MP usage and the range of action for each weapon.

The team also hopes to add in changes such as a stabilized framerate, full HD resolution and quest adjustments. Tabata said they’re still aiming for 1080p, however, framerate takes a greater priority over resolution as it impacts gameplay directly. Ultimately, the solution will be to optimize the final game at the end. They won’t be reducing the number of objects or limiting the AI to achieve those results.

While the release of the patch is not guaranteed – after all, patching a demo isn’t really something companies tend to do – Square Enix would still like it to happen. If it doesn’t, however, the updated Duscae will likely be on display at trade shows and the like.

The full report, which includes commentary on user feedback as well as the changes the development team are making in response to them, can be read here.

Final Fantasy Explorers adds Cloud, FF “Legends” ⊟

We have a new trailer for Final Fantasy Explorers, Square Enix’s multiplayer action-RPG coming to the 3DS in Japan this December. Along with showing off various classes, the video demonstrates the previously announced Trance / Legends Characters feature, which allows you to temporarily transform into popular characters from the mainline series like Final Fantasy VII’s hero Cloud.

You can also see Lightning, Squall, Terra, and silhouettes for other characters in the clip. Watch the new Tokyo Game Show trailer after the break:

I remember when this happened, and how much I wanted it to be true. A direct-ff sequel was unthinkable at the time. Then there was ffx-2, and now look at us, waist-deep in sequel/prequel garbage and Final Fantasy’s cultural currency utterly bankrupt.

If only that was the joke, and FFVIII’s Gaiden was real.

“For the new games we’ll be developing from this point on, while this may sound a bit extreme, we’ve been talking about making them as heavy JRPGs. I believe that way, we can better focus on our target, which will also bring better results.”

Today Square Enix learned that making games with designed around a core set of fun mechanics is more profitable than throwing a bunch of random stuff in to appeal to “the masses.”

Now if only everyone else would learn that.

Saw this earlier and OH MY DEAR GOD FINALLY.

first can I get a DUUUUHHHH? It’s better late than never but have these people ever googled their games in English search? Seriously? I’ve been in JRPG gaming fandom (s) from pretty much it’s US origin and we’re just now noticed as a ‘thing’? Probably good they didn’t find SOME of the things we produced with Square characters I guess… >>;

It restores some faith in SE a little though that they’re the first of the ‘big guys’ to come out publicly with the admission that chasing the wider market makes games…what’s that? OH! SHITTIER! So yeah, applause for Squeenix today, it’s about damn friggin time. 🙂

Now make more awesome games and port them straight over, especially the weird spinoffs we’ve always wanted those.
