This isn’t just another shooting.
This is now officially, with over 50 casualties, the worst mass shooting in United States history. And the fact that it took place at a gay club was not merely coincidence. This was not just another act of senseless violence in America. This was a hate crime.
A man walked into a safe space for the LGBT community with an assault rifle and lined them up and slaughtered them.
Don’t do what the media is inevitably going to do. Don’t erase where this happened and who this happened to.
When you make your statements for/against gun control, remember this was a hate crime. When you make your statements about the gunman’s reported religious beliefs, remember this was a hate crime. When your politicians make empty promises about changing the way things are, remember this was a hate crime. When you make your statements about the media’s coverage of this, remind everyone this was hate crime.
Do not gloss over the identities of the victims. They were killed for them. This was a hate crime.
To every straight person who has ever said “But what about straight pride?” or who has ever thought that the LGBTQ movement ended with marriage equality, I want you to understand that my people are being attacked. My people are dying. My heart breaks for all of those who were at Pulse in Orlando last night. These people were targeted for simply existing in the world as who they are. All my love goes out to those survivors, families of victims, and ALL of my LGBTQ* family out there. You are all in my thoughts today.

I’m sure most people are aware of the shootings that happened early this morning (around 2am) at Pulse in Orlando, Florida. As a queer person who not only lives in Orlando, but as someone who literally went to high school and grew up one block over from Pulse, I want to put out some super awesome resources for the internet to take advantage of! Please remember that last night was specifically Latin Night, so not only was this an anti-LGBTQIA+ act of violence, it was also an anti-latinx act of violence. I grew up in this area, and I visited Pulse multiple times, and it was most definitely a predominantly latinx/black club. This attack was carefully planned, I have no doubts about this.

Download it. It’s great and it’s only getting better. It’s aimed at gamers but it has nearly all the functionality of Skype and then some.
